SASOLBURG AT A GLANCE

Sasolburg is a large industrial town within the Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the far north of the Free State province of South Africa. Sasolburg forms part of the Vaal Triangle (Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Sasolburg).

Sasolburg is a sizeable town, measuring just less than 80 square kilometres in area that is situated in the South African province of the Free State. It is perched along the banks of the mighty Vaal River and is close to the Vaal Dam

Sasolburg, established as a town in the 1950’s, One of the things for which Sasolburg is well known is the refinery, which is one of only two workable coal-derived oil refineries on earth. Initially, this town was established with the aim of providing housing for employees of SASOL, which remains one of South Africa’s largest and most important energy and chemical companies.

Due to its high altitude, the climate of Sasolburg is relatively dry. Summers are hot and winters are cold, making spring and autumn the best times to visit for those that want comfortable, temperate conditions.

Residents of Sasolburg live in a thriving community defined by opulence, comfortable living and outstanding residential, commercial and retail developments. They are a stone's throw away from schools, shopping malls, hospitals, guest houses, amenities, attractions & Industrial.

D.P De Villiers Stadium 

The D.P de Villiers Stadium is a multi-sports facility.  While numerous events and sports tournaments have been hosted at the stadium, it is primarily used as a practice grounds for the Sasolburg Athletics Club and the Cobras rugby club.

In 2012, the stadium received a major revamping, a development project which was made possible by Sasol’s infrastructure initiative, Ikusasa. These renovations have increased its popularity as the stadium, with its state-of-the-art amenities, can now host regional and national events. Over the last few years, it has been one of the venues for the 2014 Vodacom Cup and the 2015 Valke Rugby Tournament. Additionally, runners from all over the province make their way to the stadium for the annual Sasol Marathon and half marathon.

Families can enjoy walks at the stadium’s community park, or simply enjoy the fresh air. The park comprises of paved nature trails, as well as an outdoor play area for children.

Penny Heyns Swimming Pool 

Sasolburg Swimming Club was established in the late 60's, and ever since trained swimmers of exceptional high standard. 

Sasolburg Swimming Club operate closely with SASOL to stage the Sasol National Winter Championships for the past 43 years. 

Several Sprinbok Swimmers and swimmers representing South Africa was trained at Sasolburg Swimming Club ex : Esmè Oosthuizen (Ewert), Karin Louw, Douggie Eagar, Simon Gray, and more recently Heleen Muller and Junior Springbok Steph Potgieter. 

Etienne Rousseau Theatre

Designed as a multi-purpose theatre, the venue has staged distinguished and varied national and international productions of drama, opera, ballet and various styles of music over the years. Some of the world-renowned artists who have appeared on the stage of the Etienne Rousseau Theatre over the years include the international legends flamenco guitarist Paco Pena, classical pianist Jorge Bolet, jazz and pop pianist Horst Jankowski, "The Man With the Golden Flute” James Galway and classical pianist Mark Zeltser.

Artists recently performed at the theatre includes Steve Hofmeyr, Elvis Blue, Sandra Prinsloo, Adam Tas, Nico Carstens, Nataniël, Rickus Nel and also host to dance, beauty and singing competitions.

Vaal River

Sasolburg is at a high altitude with a fairly dry climate and large seasonal temperature variation. It is situated on the banks of the Vaal River, which separates the Free State from the former Transvaal Province, and is not far from the Vaal Dam where excellent windsurfing spots can be found and host watersports and other leisure activities are part of the appeal of this natural treasure.

Heron Banks
Heron Banks, situated on the banks of the Vaal River, is a 5-minute escape from Sasolburg and 45-minutes from Johannesburg. It’s a place filled with a sense of wonder, where afternoon strolls begin at your doorstep and wildlife roams in your backyard. Vaal Racecourse 

The Vaal Racecourse is situated in the heart of the Vaal Triangle. As such, it is mere minutes away from Sasolburg, Vaalpark and Vanderbijlpark with Johannesburg relatively close by as well.

The racecourse is renowned for its friendly country atmosphere and for having the longest straight in South Africa at 1600m, it puts both jockey and horse at the test. The turf track is about 2900m in circumference, with races up to 1600m run on the straight course.

The original licence for the Vaal Racecourse was taken out in 1944.

The Sasol Corporation has sponsored infrastructural developments in Sasolburg. Sasol One was one of the first places to be designated as a National Key Point under the act, which legislation protected areas so designated from "loss, damage, disruption or immobilisation (that) may prejudice the Republic"
