Middelburg at a glance

Middelburg might seem like a quiet little Highveld town, but a lot of surprises await you when passing through.

Background

Middelburg, in the Ndebele heartland of Mpumalanga, was established on the farm Sterkfontein in 1866 and was known as Nasareth.  The name was changed to Middelburg in 1872 as it marks the midway between Pretoria and Lydenburg.  Today, Middelburg (en route to the Kruger National Park) is one of the growth points in SA.

The town is a large agriculture and industrial centre.

Surrounded by mainly maize and game farms.  Middelburg is also known as the Stainless Steel Capital of Africa.  Columbus Stainless Steel was constructed in 1965.  In conjunction with Thos Begbie & Co (established in 1887) they provide the bulk of the employment in the region.
