The name Witbank is Afrikaans for White Ridge and is named after
a white sandstone outcrop where wagon transport drivers rested.Witbank
Ogies (town) and Kriel (town) forms Emalahleni Local Municipality
which means 'place of coal.' It is a rapidly growing area and one
of the growth points in South Africa.Witbank is in the heartland
of electrical power generation and the regional office for Escom
is in Witbank, as well as various coal power stations like Duvha,
Kendal and Kriel Witbank is in the coal mining area with more than
22 collieries in an area no more than 40 Km in any direction, mostly
opencast mining. The head office of Billiton mining has also relocated
to Witbank.
Witbank is the home of Highveld Steel and Vanadium as well as other
steel related industries.
The biggest Municipal dam in South Africa is found here and is
a great asset to the city. Witbank is on the Maputo corridor and
is connected to Pretoria and Johannesburg with national highways
only 45 min away from OR Thambo International Airport and 2½
hours from the Kruger National Park.
