The
area which was to become Brakpan had first been occupied by a farmer J
P Botha in 1867, and the farm was known as Weltevreden(a district of Heidelberg).
In the same year it was sold to a Mr A Broderick. In April 1869, surveyor
G. Moodie visited the area and clearly defined the limits by erecting
beacons.
The discovery of gold in Johannesburg enticed people from
all walks of life to make their way to the Reef in the hope of making
a fortune. Coal was discovered on the farm Weltevreden and in 1888 the
Brakpan Colliery became operative. This was the origin of a prosperous
town called Brakpan. Municipal status was granted to Brakpan in 1919.
The town now boasts one of the largest municipal areas in the country,
comprising 225,74 m².
It
is a mere 32km from central Johannesburg and is the epicenter of East
Rand towns. Brakpan is within daily traveling distance from the University
of the Witwatersrand, the Technicon Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria
and UNISA.
Prime industrial sites are situated close to the N17 linking Brakpan
to Johannesburg in the west and to Secunda in the east. O R Tambo airport
is a mere 20 minutes drive from Brakpan and the N12 highway from Johannesburg
to Witbank can be accessed via the R23 which is the link road between
Benoni and Heidelberg. This passes next to the Brakpan suburb of Dalpark,
the Mall @ Carnival and Carnival City. Over a million vehicles use this
route per month.
Besides

CBD carries passengers east and west as well as incorporating a goods
shunting yard.

Brakpan.
