The
Huizemark Bedfordview franchise incorporates the suburbs of Bedfordview,
Oriel, Morninghill, Observatory, Bezuidenhouts Valley, Cyrildene, Bruma
and Kensington. This area is dissected by two major highways - the N3
from north to south and the N12 from east to west. This is the busiest
intersection in South Africa, and is of vital importance as the Gauteng
area controls 85% of the country's economy.
Bedfordview falls under the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council. Ekurhuleni
is a Tsonga word which loosely translates as "Place of Peace".
It denotes a place where working together to create a peaceful and prosperous
environment is encouraged and undertaken by the residents who are bound
together by their love for peace.
Bedfordview is a town on the East Rand in Gauteng, South Africa and has
been part of
the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000.
Eastgate was Johannesburg's first super-regional shopping centre. When
it opened in 1979, it was the largest shopping centre in the southern
hemisphere. It remains one of the largest centres in the country, and
is the second-largest shopping centre in the Greater Johannesburg metro,
after Sandton City. The centre lies next to the R24 airport freeway, between
the Johannesburg CBD and OR Thambo International Airport.
Gillooly's Farm is right next to the N3 highway in Senderwood, a short
drive from Edenvale and Bedfordview. Every day except for Sunday entrance
is free. Sunday seems
to be the most popular day for visitors. Braai facilities are available
all around the lake. There is a restaurant with seating both indoors and
outdoors. Gillooly's Farm offers you an escape rom the city without even
leaving the city. Gillooly's Farm also offers the perfect venue for weddings
and conferences.
Edenvale is situated close to 2 major highways and the OR Thambo International
Airport is only about 15 minutes away making it feel very central. Edenvale
has the atmosphere of a peaceful town and one often forgets just how close
it is to the city and all the bustling routes.
The
history of Edenvale dates back to 1902. Edenvale experienced a building
boom from the 1940's onwards when water and electricity became available.
Building societies interested themselves in Edenvale and granted loans
for housing. This greatly assisted in the rapid development of the Edenvale
municipal area.
Most of the streets in Edenvale were numbered but 12th Street Extension
was named after Edenvale's pioneer, Harry Sneech. 5th Street was changed
to Hendrik Potgieter Street on the occasion of the Voortrekker Centenary
in 1938.The town's oldest building, the old Horwood's Farmhouse (built
in 1902), is now officially recognised as a national monument by the National
Monument's Council.
Linksfield Golf Club boasts three golf courses (White, Blue and Yellow)
situated on 250 hectares of lush parklands in the Linksfield, Edenvale
area. The location of the club being close to the airport, highways and
public transport systems makes it very accessible for golfers all around
Gauteng.
The enormous Green Belt in the centre of Johannesburg is a sanctuary for
numerous bird species and wildlife.
Gold gave Germiston its begining in 1886. It became a municipality in
1903 and a city in 1950. Because of Germiston`s unique geographic position,
situated at the center of the Pretoria-Witwatersrand -Vereeniging axis,
Germiston became the focus of the country`s most extensive railway network.
Today some 200 000 rail passengers and 170 000 metric tons of goods pass
through the City`s station each month.
Benoni's
inauspicious beginnings were in 1881 when then surveyor-general Johan
Rissik found it difficult to assign title deeds to all unclaimed state
property. He named the area Benoni (son of my sorrows), after the name
given by Rachel to her son in the biblical Book of Genesis. Benoni is
one of the friendlier cities on the East Rand, and if you go there you
can expect a warm reception from most of the people who live there. It's
also very diverse, with people of every colour and denomination. There
are over ten schools in Benoni and in some areas there is a concentration
of up to 6000 students within a 5km radius.
Today the town is focused more on industry and services, rather than mining,
and is used as a service hub for other East Rand towns such as Brakpan,
Nigel and Springs. Benoni is also the site of the Benoni Heliport, for the
use of helicopters.
Visitors to the town may visit the local museum, the many lakes, the Lakeside
Shopping Mall (built in the shape of a Mississippi Steamboat on one of the
lakes) or Northmead Square (known as the first shopping centre to bring
cinemas back to Benoni) located in the suburbs. Near to Northmead Square
is the Bunny Park which contains hundreds of rabbits and other small animals
and is aimed at children.
World famous Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron was born in Benoni.
She then moved to become a star in Hollywood, but was seen in Benoni again
promoting her movie Monster. Benoni was also the setting for the MTV-inspired,
popular cult movie Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni, released internationally
in 2005.
The town is currently run by the African National Congress (ANC), with
the liberal- democratic Democratic Alliance being the official local opposition.
